Supporting our Community

Search

Dear St. David’s Center families,

I am heartbroken to share the terrible outcome of the search for Waeys Ali Mohamed. Waeys’ body was found in Minnehaha Creek this afternoon by a volunteer. There are no words to convey the depth of the grief his family will carry with them from this day forward. For any parent, there is no greater loss than a child.

Some children with Autism Spectrum Disorder or other developmental disabilities don’t recognize danger in instances when it would be critical for them to do so, to keep them safe. So, as parents, many of you live in a state of constant vigilance, doing everything possible to prevent the unexpected. For many, this moment may hit especially close to home.

As parents and caregivers, many of us will put ourselves in the shoes of the Mohamed family. We feel compassion for the depth of grief today brings. And I know that for some of you, this tragedy will stir especially strong feelings, perhaps even fear for the safety of your own child. We understand that fear. One you live with every day.

But you’re not alone. You and your children are part of the St. David’s Center community, connected to people who deeply care. Reach out to your clinicians and therapists for support if you are struggling. St. David’s Center will also hold two support sessions for those parents and caregivers who would benefit from a holding space for your minds and hearts as you absorb this tragedy, tomorrow, Tuesday, June 11 and Wednesday, June 12.

Come to all or just part of these sessions:

Wednesday, June 12 – 12:00 pm – 1:00 pm

Please note each of these sessions will be able to host up to 100 people. Due to the sensitive nature of the conversation, we are not able to create recordings.

We are here for you.
