When Cameron was born, his future was shaped by instability. His parents were in the middle of a painful divorce, and shortly after, his father was incarcerated. Without a stable caregiver, Cameron spent his earliest years moving between relatives — missing out on the consistent, nurturing relationships every child needs to thrive. That’s when his great-uncle Mark stepped in: Mark had already raised Cameron’s older brother. Years earlier, he had even stepped in to care for Cameron’s father. Now, once again, he opened his heart and home — this time to a young child carrying the impact of early traumatic experiences. Almost immediately, Mark knew Cameron was deeply struggling. He was hypervigilant and controlling. He couldn’t keep his body calm and had difficulty connecting emotionally. He was bolting barefoot out of the house into the snowy street in the middle of winter. He wasn’t using the bathroom like other children his age. As Mark shared: “It was a huge challenge — and one that, quite frankly, I wasn’t ready for.” Dive deeper into Cameron’s story in the video below to find out how St. David’s Family Place and coordinated, interdisciplinary, and trauma-informed support helped both Mark and Cameron grow and thrive together.
